Dr. Jen Blum has never followed the expected path—she’s built her own. As only the second Black woman to earn a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Michigan, she set an early precedent: lead boldly, keep learning, and push beyond limits. That same drive now fuels her latest chapter in entrepreneurship.
As founder and AI translator of JenAI Group, Jen is redefining how organizations engage with artificial intelligence. Her clarity-first, human-centered consultancy helps leaders cut through complexity to implement AI solutions that are practical, ethical, and built to work in the real world. Read on to see how she continues to carve new paths in tech and beyond.
Have you ever felt like you're "different"? If yes, in what ways has this contributed to your journey as an entrepreneur?
I've often felt different, especially because I bridge highly technical worlds and everyday conversations. As an astrophysicist turned AI leader, I naturally see patterns and systems that others don't always notice. I also feel a strong need to translate complexity into clarity. That sense of being between worlds pushed me to become an entrepreneur. I realized that many people were intimidated by AI and needed someone who could make it approachable. Feeling different became the foundation of my purpose and the reason I built my own path.
We dare you to brag: What achievements are you most proud of?
I'm proud of proving that I can be deeply technical and deeply human at the same time. From advancing Trustworthy AI initiatives with KRNL Labs and OpenBox AI to leading large AI programs in defense and founding JenAI Group, I've consistently made AI easier to understand. I've secured funding, guided major program transitions, and helped organizations understand AI without fear. Most of all, I'm proud that I built something of my own instead of waiting for permission.
How do you celebrate successes along the way?
I intentionally pause instead of immediately chasing the next milestone. That can look like booking a meaningful trip, planning a special dinner, or marking the moment with my husband so it becomes a memory instead of just another achievement. Success feels more powerful when I allow it to land instead of rushing past it.
What are the biggest mistakes you've made?
One of my biggest lessons learned was assuming personal alignment automatically meant business alignment. I once partnered with a friend and realized we had very different expectations, communication styles, and standards in a professional setting. It taught me the importance of clear contracts, defined roles, and protecting both the relationship and the business. I've also learned not to overextend myself by giving away too much for free. Generosity is powerful, but sustainability matters just as much.
In what ways has your upbringing or past experiences contributed to how you operate as an entrepreneur?
My parents shaped how I lead more than any formal training ever could. My late father consistently encouraged me to pursue math and science and to trust my intellectual curiosity. This gave me the confidence to step into technical spaces that aren't always welcoming. My mother instilled in me independence, resilience, and that belief that I should never shrink myself to fit expectations. Together, they taught me the value of relationships, integrity, and standing firmly in what I do best. As an entrepreneur, I carry both their voices with me.
What's next for you and your company/career?
Scale and influence. I'm focused on expanding JenAI Group's impact by helping organizations—small and large businesses alike—build AI literacy, implement trustworthy AI systems, and make confident, strategic decisions about emerging technologies. At the same time, I'm stepping further into executive-level leadership, where I can shape projects and direction. My goal is to operate at the intersection of innovation, ethics, and real-world execution, ensuring that AI is both powerful and responsible.
